| 摘要 | Luminous Essence is a translation of a Tibetan commentary to a major work of Buddhist tantra: the Secret Nucleus Tantra (Skt. Guhyagarbha Tantra). Rather than presenting a line‐by‐line analysis of the Guhyagarbha, Mipham's commentary gives a brief, technical summation of tantric theory, doxography, and practice using the Guhyagarbha as an organizing principle and a source of authority. The sound, careful translation by the Dharmachakra Translation Committee undoubtedly benefited from its committee approach and its consultations with native Tibetan scholars. With no explanatory essays or scholarly apparatus, this is a “just the text” publication, and is explicitly oriented to a readership of Guhyagarbha practitioners. The translation will interest specialized scholars, although they will miss features like footnotes, notes on translation equivalents, and references to the Tibetan edition of the text. Luminous Essence is also a highly technical work, so readers with a general interest in Buddhist tantra will want first to consult other sources for history and context related to the Guhyagarbha Tantra, as well as for information on Mipham's own particular views and interpretive approaches. Nonetheless, for those with a strong background in the Guhyagarbha, this provides a welcome addition to the few translated primary sources related to this important tantra. |
