| 摘要 | Hiltebeitel, among the most prolific Indic scholars ever, has turned his focus to a topic that naturally follows from his deep interest in the Sanskrit epics, particularly the Mahābhārata. This is one of two books on dharma that he has published in the last year; the earlier and much shorter one was simply titled Dharma (University of Hawaii Press, 2010), and is intended for classroom use. The present book is a vast expansion of the previous book, but Hiltebeitel takes the topic in other directions as well. Among the topics that Hiltebeitel has not previously addressed is Buddhism; he inquires in separate chapters on the dharma supposed and posited by Aśoka, the Pāli canon, and Aśvaghoṣa's Buddhacarita. He weaves this material into discussions of many of the expected texts on dharma, including the various strata of Vedic literature, the Laws of Manu, the Rāmāyaṇa, and the Mahābhārata (and notably, within this, the Bhagavad‐Gītā). Among his crucial areas of inquiry is the situational ethic. He examines how dharmic action was interpreted when problems or conflicts arose, indeed how conundrums resulting from sociocultural background issues or personal desire gave rise to conflicted notions of dharma. For example, in early Buddhism, he shows how dharma and dharmas arose from an interface of kṣatriya Buddhists with brahman law. He further discusses the difference between long‐term dharma (yugas and other eons) and issues of immediate concern; how dharma as devotion for women (Sītā and Draupadī) in a world in which the intricacies of dharma were intended for men; and, importantly, that the Buddhacarita is fundamentally a manual of dharma. This rich book must become essential reading for everyone with an interest in Indic religion, history, and culture. |
