| 摘要 | Hsia's well‐written book shows us a great encounter between Western and Eastern civilizations through the life of sixteenth‐century Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci. This book describes his life chronologically from his early years in Macerata, Portugal to Beijing, China. Following Ricci's twenty‐four‐year journey, Hsia tries to show how Christianity met and discussed with great eastern religions (Buddhism and Confucianism) and how Christianity accommodated or contextualized itself to Chinese culture in the sixteenth century. Before Ricci came to China, the Catholic Church used the form of Buddhism. However, when Ricci realized that the “emptiness” of Buddhism could be contradictory to the monotheism of Christianity, he changed his stance to anti‐Buddhism. Then he started a dialogue with Confucianism. He tried to introduce “the Lord of Heaven” to Confucianists through Western philosophy and common sense, not sacred books. Ricci thus offers us a good example of the contextualization of Christianity and interreligious dialogue. Hsia considers Ricci as “laying the foundations” of Christianity in China. However, Hsia also evaluates Ricci as “the man of paradox” because of his radical accommodation of Christian belief to Confucianism. The book is a solid biography with accurate and abundant resources. It lacks, however, a missiological perspective. Still, this is an important contribution to the church history, missiology, and interreligious dialogue. It is useful for graduate and upper lever master's‐of‐divinity students. Every seminary library should have a copy. |
