| 摘要 | This book explores how Buddhism is transmitted and transformed not only within Asia, but also in the West. The prefix “trans‐” is used frequently throughout the text in the examination of trans‐regions, trans‐generations, trans‐religions, trans‐languages, and trans‐disciplines. In the end, they suggest the emergence of “trans‐Buddhism.” Twelve articles are collected and divided into three sections, transmission, translation, and transformation. In the first section, four articles discuss the impact of Buddhism in the West and how its appropriation in a new context, such as among prisoners or in Buddhist temples in America, has formed a new face of Buddhism in the West. The issue of authenticity and appropriation persists in the second section, Translation. J. Garfield explores the ways in which translation of Buddhist texts transforms Buddhist teachings and T. Rohlich uses the translation of two Medieval Japanese poems to reveal the inherent linguistic challenges of Buddhist translation. M. D'Amato and J. Stangl respectively explore the translated messages of Buddhism in pop culture, such as movies and sports. The third section, Transformation, shows the interchange between Buddhism and modern intellectual movements, especially concentrating on the flow of “Westernized” Buddhist ideas back to Asia. For example, K. L. Tsomo indicates the significant role of women in facilitating global transmission and in return, the benefits of feminist ideas flowing back to benefit women and Buddhist societies. This book provides a kaleidoscopic perspective in trying to encompass many issues that transBuddhism encounters in the process of transmission, translation and transformation, and documents the ways in which Buddhism keeps transforming itself while maintaining its own authenticity in a global context |
