| 摘要 | Blizek, Professor of Philosophy and Religion and Chair of Religious Studies at the University of Nebraska—Omaha, and Journal of Religion and Film editor, stresses the legitimacy of film as a significant academic subject, as art, and as a means of learning about popular culture and religion. The editor, who also contributed three of the twenty‐nine chapters and co‐authored another, divides his book into three sections: academic work by religious studies scholars over the past three decades; essays covering religious traditions of major religious sects—Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism; and chapters on specific religious themes like Jesus, the Bible, and the Holocaust. Two films that are covered often are Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ (the latter in M. Wright's fine essay). Blizek's book covers much ground, but some discussion of the films deviates from religion. G. Matalon's “Holocaust Movies” section is comprehensive and does a fine job discussing perspective in Schindler's List, but fails to mention the East German version of Jakob the Liar, instead discussing the melodramatic American version. This fine companion to the history of religious movies will prove valuable to scholars and students because it covers many different films of various genres and of different faiths. |
