| 摘要 | This book deals with an important topic: practical issues related to religion in health care. This topic is sometimes referred to as cultural sensitivity. There are ten chapters in the book, plus an introduction and a conclusion. The religious traditions covered include: American Indian religions (e.g., Navajo), Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese religions (e.g., Confucianism and Taoism), Sikhism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and recent religious movements in America (Mormons, Seventh‐Day Adventists, Christian Scientists, and Jehovah's Witnesses). Other traditions could have been included, as well as those who identify themselves as “spiritual but not religious,” but surely no single text can be comprehensive. Each chapter explores sickness, health, birth, and death in a particular tradition after giving a brief history of the tradition. The goal of these chapters is not to offer a scholarly account of these concepts in each tradition but rather to convey useful information to healthcare professionals. They summarize this information, which is one strength of the volume, in boxes of do's and do‐not's at the end of each chapter. One weakness of the volume, however, is that most chapters spend too much time dealing with the history and beliefs of each tradition—information that can be found in countless textbooks on world religions. Another weakness is that, by the term “healthcare professional,” the authors seem to assume doctors and nurses. But what about religious issues related to, say, dentistry and public health? The authors took on a very difficult task, and should be commended them for their contributions. Recommended. |
