| 摘要 | Examining Buddhist rituals, symbols, and bureaucracy, this book focuses on the political and social roles of Buddhism played in tenth‐century Korea. This book opens up some new avenues for research into areas that have been relatively neglected in Buddhist studies, and is thus a welcome contribution to the study of the relationship between Buddhism and politics, religion and power, and ideology and history. However, this book is not without its limitations. To what degree can we trust epigraphic material to understand Koryǒ Buddhism? How can we interpret T'aejo's Buddhist view, which appears to be incongruent with the Buddha's teaching as a life education system? The author's definitions of the state as a small group of top officials and state protection Buddhism as official Buddhism still remain problematic. Another area in need of further analysis is the Koryǒ kings' view of good governing. Investigation of how the ideological underpinnings behind Koryǒ Buddhist rituals emerge is also discussed in this work. The concepts of Buddhist dharma, ideology, and worldview need to be further specified and clarified. The roles of major Buddhist events and royal and state preceptors also need to be further explored from the sociopolitical perspective in medieval Korea. Unlike the author's argument, no record indicates that those preceptors were major officiants in the Assembly of Eight Prohibitions and the lantern festival. In spite of these points requiring further clarification, this book will definitely serve as an essential reference for anyone who is interested in the history of Korean Buddhism in a broader Asian context. |
