| 摘要 | In Faith and Law, editor R. Cochran of Pepperdine University's School of Law has assembled a valuable collection of sixteen essays by American legal scholars that focus perspectives of several religious traditions on particular legal issues. While most of the essays represent Christian perspectives, the book encompasses Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim contributions as well. Evangelicals, Roman Catholics, Calvinists, Baptists, African‐Americans, Anabaptists, Mormons, and the Churches of Christ all find representation among the essays. The contributions include a Lutheran perspective on legal ethics, a Hindu view of euthanasia, an evangelical reflection on abortion, a Muslim view on free speech, and several other similar takes on particular legal issues. I found T. Schaffer's Anabaptist view of legal education and R. French's Buddhist perspective on victim compensation to present the most useful and disciplined intertwinings of legal and religious analysis. My only lament is that these essays have little explicit engagement of specific religious traditions with contemporary trends in jurisprudence, such as law and economics, or more progressive approaches to law. This volume would represent a good addition as a supplemental text to a law school or graduate seminar class on law and religion. |
