| 摘要 | This paper is a brief introduction to the life of a Chinese Buddhist monk, Xüan Zhuang, and his Mahāvihāra, a Buddhist monastic University, Nālandā in India. It is a dedication to the memory of his literary contributions and Nālandā’s historical position as a center of learning which fostered many eminent scholars. It describes briefly Xüan Zhuang’s exceptional contribution to the history and archeology of India, and his insights on the situation of Buddhism in 7th century India. As regards Nalanda, an attempt is made to highlight its academic importance and its role in the propagation of Buddhism. The article is based on information gleanable from Chinese sources. |
