| 摘要 | The Pali words puñña and kusala are often misused and misunderstood by Buddhists. Both refer to the outcome of positive action, but careful analysis of the context of their use in the Pali Canon uncovers an important difference in meaning. For a Buddhist, meritorious deeds have much significance when they are geared towards one's liberation. To this end, one must develop kusala, spiritual skills that assist the process of liberation. If these skills are neglected at any point, one faces the danger of falling into other-worldly intentions some of which are characterized as negative in Buddhism. If the intentions are not pure, it is possible that one could perform an act of generosity and generate not kusala but akusala, its exact opposite. If one desires and wishes for more material things by giving, then one is not performing d̄ana but an act that generates more craving. It is for this reason that cetan̄a, or purity of intent, is given prime place in Buddhism. |
