| 摘要 | This article takes at look at changing role of Buddhist monks in Sri Lankan society as well as the vital role of the laity. Buddhism in Sri Lanka is mentioned to have been revived by Henry Olcott, an American who came to the country on May 1880. Olcott, who played a key role in Sri Lankan public education, is cited for opening 205 schools and three colleges. The article also discusses the role of a monk as social worker and teacher, among others, and Buddhism's contribution to local culture. |
