| 摘要 | In this paper I discuss explanations for why Japanese students fail to reach their goals. In particular I discuss single-cause explanations. Single-cause explanations focus on one factor while ignoring other factors. The two types of single-cause explanations I discuss are genetic and environmental. To avoid the pitfalls of single-cause explanations, I suggest that we view problems from multiple perspectives. I give some examples of how this is done and implemented in the language classroom. One specific suggestion I make is a greater focus on proximate (or immediate) goals as opposed to an overbearing concern for ultimate (long-term) goals. |
