Starting a new University in 1998, based on a progressive view of the world, looking to build and international student and teacher profile, erecting a semester system that has a global outlook and borderless view of information technology is both an exciting and rewarding experience, especially when you are the only show in town. But demonstrating the relevance of such a place of learning to the local population unused to the presence of a university or, for that matter, the presence of large numbers of non-Japanese, is another task altogether. Or is it? This article uses a very local story and extrapolates its international significance less in terms of its historial occurrence, and more from what the incident means for generations that come after, at a different intersection of history, people's life courses and purposes.
