| 摘要 | What is the Brahmi Majjhima Nikaya? Brahmi is the name of the alphabet which was used in ancient India. The best known inscriptions in Brahmi are the rock-cut edicts of Ashoka, dating to the 3rd century BC. These were long considered the earliest examples of Brahmi writing, but recent archeological evidence in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu may push back the date for the earliest use of Brahmi to the 5th or 6th century BC. Thus, this alphabet may already have been in use during Buddha's lifetime. Although religious discourses were considered "too sacred" to be written down at that time (they were memorized instead) this present volume is the historically first attempt at printing the word of the Buddha not only in his own language, Pali, but also in the alphabet of his day and age.
