| 摘要 | Among various religious movements of emerge in Thailand inrecent years, the worship of Kuanyin is especsally pvominento This sect's abilityvto adjust itsalf to Thai urban lifa, the religious esfablishment and populir reliqion has lead to its widaspread popularity in cities and towns throughout Thailand. In this article I staurt by discussing the role of overseas chinese in the formation of Thai urbar (especially middle class) life and how the Kuanyin sect has developed from its ethnic oriqins. I point to the sect′s adjustrnents to thai urban life, the role fo women in Thai society and pre-existing relinqious culture (both official and populas) as reasons for its achieving both move widespread popularity and greater influence than other newly emerg ant Thai reliqious movements. In today's scientifically advanced world, the rise fo new reliqious movermnts in nwmerous countries arourd the world is a phenonema wortly of extensive rescarch and analysisi an examination of the rise of the Kuanyin sect in contemyo to rary Thailand may help shed some liqht on this impontant issue. |
