All are shown to be fictitious concepts, neither existent nor non-existent, but simply empty and open. On the relative level it makes sense to speak of true and false, good and bad - a dream house is different from a house of bricks and stones, and the path to realization differs from concern with worldly pleasures - but on an absolute level there is no distinction. The dialectic developed by Nagarjuna and adopted by Madyamika teachers made Madyamika a unique teaching, for its followers took no position and made no assertions. Operating in an intellectual climate where issues of philosophy were widely debated, Madhyamika masters made the process of argument itself into a practice, challenging all views without exception… Only the Middle Way, which accepts appearances as what they are, without taking any position, allows for the possibility of realization and freedom from suffering. |
