| 摘要 | Want a good night's rest? Zen offers a surprising discovery. It turns out the problem is not sleep at all. The problem is the usual way of seeing sleep as a mysterious biological process, subject to disorders that require attention. Such a framework inevitably promotes anxiety when sleep fails to arrive on time. Zen Sleep offers a return to an earlier time of sleep, before the medical model of our bodies took hold. It rejects everything academic in favor of direct experience. This approach transcends the usual step-by-step program found in conventional self-help books. Instead, quiet reflection on our situation with sleep reveals where we go wrong. Fundamental discoveries are made at the beginning. Readers first explore how the pressure to sleep comes not from any real urgency, but from unnecessaary worries about performance the next day. Other possible sources of sleep anxiety are identified, such as an unfounded "duty" to sleep and the way modern life transforms what is a simple experience into an important task on the daily "to do" list. In addition, the various ways one can have a healthy or unhealthy relationship with sleep are examined. At the end of every chapter a list of open-ended questions provide an opportunity to reflect on what you have read and perhaps apply the material to your own life. Each chapter builds upon previous material. As a deeper sense of sleep evolves, more impenetrable truths are exposed, such as the fact that there is no "do" in sleep. The mind will insist one "does" sleep as though it were an action that can be done at will. Readers are encouraged to trust their own experience that sleep is in fact a total cessation of "doing." Absolutely no skill or effort is involved. For readers wanting to progress to higher levels of understanding, Zen Sleep delivers. Ultimately what we call sleep reflects the ebb and flow quality of consciousness. This understanding lies beyond the Western habit of categorizing consciousness at awake or asleep, and then trying to maintain one or the other. Neither awake nor asleep exists to be be captured or controlled. That is not the nature of consciousness. Awareness will change direction to sleepiness and back again on its own, if just left alone. Often called "the path which is not any particular path," Zen concerns itself with uncovering how things really are. The revelations in Zen Sleep may appear difficult to see at first. But if you really look-the way a Zen Buddhist would look-you can see that insomnia is a manufactured problem. The journey back to the time before sleep was made problematic requires no prior knowledge of Zen. It only requires patience to see what the words refer to, and trust in your own observations. You are the authority, the source of enlightenment-not the author. Zen Sleep is merely your compass. |
