| 摘要 | We can learn through the Mahaparinibbana-suttanta scripture a fair amount of detail about events just before and just after the end of his life, at the age of just over eighty. The Pali word nibbana, or nirvana in Sanskrit, originally had the meaning to blow out, as for instance a lamp, and by a shift of meaning it came to be used as a word to express the death of the Buddha. Besides the Pali version of this text, fragments of the Sanskrit version have been found in Central Asia, and there is a Tibetan translation and five translations into Chinese. The accounts they give have roughly the same content (although there are a fair number of additions in the various texts) and they may be taken to be close to the historical and geographical facts.
