| 摘要 | The Paramitas are usually translated as the Perfections, but a more literal translation would be 'having crossed over', crossed over to the other shore of Nirvana from this shore of Samsara. What this also means is, having gone entirely beyond the ambit of 'I', they are therefore perfections quite unattainable by 'I'. The first of the Six Perfections is Giving (dana); the second is Restraint (sila); the third is Patient Endurance (ksanti); the fourth is Energy or Effort (virya); the fifth is Absorption (dhyana) and the sixth is Insight Wisdom (prajna). Although set out as a list they are practised all together because the practice of Giving does not have to be perfected before the practice of Restraint is begun. In fact we need the seed of wisdom at the beginning in order realize that the Buddha's teaching is worth giving ourselves to at all, and in the end it requires the entire giving up of 'I' to reach the Perfection of Wisdom. However, because we are not yet beyond the ambit of 'I', we have to begin from that 'I' standpoint. |
