The Debate on understanding Buddhism, immediately or gradually, was occasioned in the Liu Song period under the reign of the Southern Dynasties rendered a great measure of influence on Liu Xie's literary thought. Liu's position on this matter was basically conforming with the reverend monks Dao An and Hui Yuan, holding eclecticism which did good as a key to him in forming his theory of writing.
