摘要"Top-Doli" is a work in two movements for chamber ensemble. It utilizes alto flute, flute, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, xylophone, gong, temple blocks, violin, and cello as well as two very popular Korean instruments: the kayagum and changgo. "Top-Doli" is based on the traditional Korean folk song "Top-doli," and represents the essence of traditional Korean culture and the spirit of Buddhism in which the majority of Koreans believe. The word "Top-Doli" itself means "to go around the pagoda." It is frequently sung in Buddhist temples--to celebrate the Buddha's Birthday or to pray for one's wishes. The piece demonstrates a juxtaposition of Korean and Western sonorities by using a combination of Korean and Western instruments. Bicultural scalar resources are also presented in the form of pentatonic scales and six-note aggregates (in various combinations) which ultimately yield all twelve chromatic pitches. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the development of pitch class sets by means of varying instrumentation, register, and form. The work ends with all the Korean and Western elements combined with a women's chorus singing the "Top-Doli" melody.
