| 摘要 | The article is the "Editor's Introduction" to a double issue of the journal devoted to the work of Kuroda Toshio (1926-1993，family name Kuroda) whose work has had a profound effect on the understanding of Japanese religion during the "mediaeval" Kamakura Period. Against the trend，and demonstrated，that it was not so much the new schools of that period which dominated the religious scene as the underlying pattern of "exoteric-esoteric" (kenmitsu) Buddhism carried by the established Tendai and Shingon denominations. Moreover，Shinto had no really separate existence during this period，but was submerged in the kenmitsu worldview，which also provided a general ideology for social and political life. The issue contains several detailed articles by Kuroda himself，translated here by various western specialists, and further articles by Fabio Rambelli，Taira Masayuki，and Sueki Fumihiko on the subject of his work，which are also summarised in this issue of Science of Religion. |
