This research is a reflection on our living as "being-in-the-world" through the participation in caring of the dying. The reflection shows that even though we are not aware of our "being-towards-death",yet still we are moving towards the end of life:the body is getting older and weaker, and our relationship with others is going to collapse. In other words, by being with the dying,we reflexively see the destiny of our own that we don't see. Furthermore,we find our temporality as "being-in-the-world" is made up of living with others and doing things all the time that the temporality of the dying differs. In the light of Levinas' phenomenology, we understand the seek for living with others and doing things all the time is the attempt of a being to build "otherwise than Being" and thus be able to escape from "il y a". Through being with the dying, however,we finallyunderstand the fragility of the attempt and return to "il y a". That is what the nearness of death has revealed to us:we won't be protected by living with others and doing things forever. As our living is no longer concealed by it,we are more open to our death and get the chance to be close to the rootness of our life, the Mystery of Being. |
