| 摘要 | In Buddhism there are two kinds of truths those which result out of social convention and those that go beyond. When any problem in the former realm is analyzed in accordance with Buddhist philosophical tenets, it is necessary to outline the related issues in terms of definitional convention or sammuti. There is a misconception that Buddhism rejects out of hand notions such as nation，race，family，caste，etc. It is assumed that the concerns of Buddhism transcend such categories. There are two central concepts of Buddhism：compassion and wisdom. If compassion was a necessary and sufficient condition，then the Buddha would not have elaborated on wisdom or prajna. Hitler could not have been overcome by maitriya alone. Today there is a discourse about peace in Sri Lanka. It is an extremely artificial exercise and one that is clearly being orchestrated under the threat of terrorist attack. Our responsibility is to ensure that the jathika sammuti is given voice and the lie of the conflict sammuti (世俗) is exposed. It is also necessary to initiate a real dialogue about peace，one which seeks to bring together a fractured country through recognising the cultural similarities of the Tamil and Sinhala people and fostering these，by using the traditional ethic of co-existence and mutual nurturing among the communities. The Tamil polity has been murdered. We too have a responsibility to resurrect this Tamil polity，to unearth its voice even as it is being silenced by gunfire. This voice that prefers co-existence to perpetual violence，which recognises the infinite capacities for regeneration that exists in the cultural and religious traditions of both communities, needs to be awakened. It is with this Tamil voice that the real voice of the Sinhalese needs to dialogue. Today，both these voices have been taken out of the political equation. And this is why all the rhetoric about peace has no meaning. |
