| 摘要 | The intimate connection between religion and literature has become a commonplace assumption in the study of Christianity and western culture. In the study of South Asian religions, however，relatively little attention has been paid to this relationship. This study argues that，in early medieval South India, it was in the literary arena that religious ideals and values were publicly contested. Review：Though dominated by Hinduism，Jainism and Buddhism were also vital aspects of medieval Southern India. Through a careful and imaginative reading of two different texts, Anne Monius explores how the Buddhist community in the Tamil-speaking region carved a space for itself. She argues that literary texts provided a sophisticated arena for the articulation，defense，and contestation of religious identity. The two texts - the vibrant and saucy sixth-century poetic narrative Manimekalai and the eleventh-century treatise on grammar and poetics, the Viracoliyam - reveal how the Tamil-speaking Buddhist communities represented and imagined themselves within India and in relation to Buddhists in other parts of Asia. Monius also discusses the texts in respect to the formation of Buddhist reading communities and the development of a sophisticated multi-lingual literati. Imagining a Place for Buddhism succeeds on many different levels：it offers riveting readings of two very different but fascinating texts; presents a welcome complement to the Hindu-dominant narratives of Southern Indian medieval history; and provides a compelling and internationalist perspective on medieval Buddhism. |
