| 摘要 | This sutra, taught to a Buddhist layman by the name of Sujata, sets forth the moral code to be observed by lay followers of Buddhism (the word upasaka in the title is Sanskrit for 'layman'). Taking the name of the protagonist，it is also known as the Sujata-sutra, and the moral code prescribed therein is the so-called 'Mahayana Precepts, ' also known as the 'Bodhisattva Precepts.' Consequently it was in Mahayanist China that it was especially valued. This work is considered to be an augmentation and adaptation on Mahayanist principles of the Sujata-sutra found in the Dirghagama (No. 1)，Madhyamagama (No. 2) and other works, and owing to the fact that it includes quotations from various Mahayana sutras, it also serves as a valuable source of material for tracing the history of the development of the Buddhist Canon. |
