摘要
Though universally regarded as one of the most important American playwrights, Tennessee Williams has bewildered some critics by his obsession with abnormal stage characters. His almost morbid preoccupation with perversion strongly suggests the close connection between the playwright and his personages in terms of psychology.
Obviously，Williams does not believe in keeping an aesthetic distance. How close，then，is Williams to his characters? Can we identify，and to what extent，Williams with any of his characters?
Many of Williams' heroes/heroines are homosexuals, neurotics, or nymphomaniacs. On the one hand，Williams shows great sympathy for them，and grants them opportunities to speak for themselves. On the other hand，Williams brings them to a cruel fate-death, or sexual violation，or asylum.
Therefore，my essay aims at probing Williams' fear and desire through examining one of the characters that resemble Williams most-Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. Williams' role as a homosexual and his referring to himself as Blanche DuBois endorse this choice. Employing psychoanalysis as my method，I intend to search for the author in the character，at the same time proposing another perspective for looking at the play.
