| 摘要 | Considers the meanings attached to the concept "Chinese",with reference to firsthand experience. In recent times there has been a feeling of nostalgia among the educated Chinese for ancient Chinese literature and philosophy, whereas among ordinary people knowledge of so-called traditional music has often proved scant, having been replaced to a large extent by Taiwanese and Hong Kong popular music. In more robust eras of Chinese history, for example the Han and Tang periods, the idea of "Chinese culture" did not exist. Instead, world culture, all that could be gained from every source, entered into China and its culture. During the Han dynasty Buddhism was imported from India, along with many instruments that today are regarded as traditional Chinese instruments. A large share of the Tang repertoire came from Asia Minor. Only when China grew weak and was threatened by other powers did the notion of Chinese identity become so important. The essence of Chinese culture may be an openness to other cultures. For the individual artist it is limiting to representing a single cultural identity; such associations inevitably simplify complex realities. |
