| 摘要 | Zhinhua (Wisdom Attained) Temple in Beijing was built in 1446，during the reign of Zhu Qizhen (temple name：Ying Zong) as the family temple of Wang Zhen，the influential chief eunuch at the imperial court. Famous for its architecture and library of Buddhist scriptures, the temple also inaugurated and preserved an important tradition of Buddhist music known today as jing (capital) music. This music was taught and regularly performed through 28 generations of Zhinhua Temple musicians, up to the 1950s. During the 19th c. jing music spread to some dozen temples and nunneries, and became the representative Buddhist music for northern China. The earliest surviving sources of jing music，from the late 17th c.，are described，and the usual elements in a daytime service (zhongtangqu) and a nighttime service (liaoqiao; held to appease the flaming-mouthed hungry ghost) are listed. In recent decades jing music has been revived through efforts of the Beijing Buddhist Association and the Zhongyang Yinyue Zueyuan (Beijing)，and since 1987 monastic musicians have made several foreign tours. |
