| 摘要 | Shitennoji Temple in Osaka was the oldest Buddhist establishment in Japan, built in 593,soon after the introduction of Buddhism to the country. Osaka being Japan's port toward China and Korea, it was not only the natural entryway for Buddhism, but for the music and dance practices that were associated with it as well. Priests were the first practitioners of these at the temple, whence it spread in Osaka, and eventually to Tokyo. The tradition of gagaku became codified around 900,in the Heian era (794-1185),and the Shitennoji Garyokai has been one of its three historic institutes (gakuso) in Japan. |
