| 摘要 | Presents a detailed account of the Portuguese musical presence in Japan from the mid-16th c. into the 1630s, when the remaining Christians were either exiled，martyred，or driven underground. Attention is given to the spread of Jesuit missionary activities and related musical training of Japanese converts; uses made various Western instruments, including the organ; the introduction of polyphony; the embassy made by four young Japanese noblemen to Europe in 1582-86; and the faltering fortunes of the Christian enterprise under the rulers Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) and Toikugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). Iconographic evidence of painted screens with musical subjects and other material remains of Western music is also presented. Although a prior blending Buddhism and Shinto in Japan disposed Japanese to tolerate Christianity，too，eventually，increasingly suspicious rulers suppressed the Western faith (traces of which survived in the Nagasaki area until the reopening of Japan to Western influence，in the 19th c.).
