| 摘要 | Although prohibited by the Japanese government for a period during the 19th c., shamanism is still practiced today by itako in the northeast of the main island of Honshu. Containing many elements of Buddhism and Shinto, the rituals practiced by these shamans are applied for the purposes of exorcism, divination, and faith healing. Chants, noises, and musical instruments such as handbells, drums, and tapped bows play an important role in these ceremonies. |
