| 摘要 | Platanus orientalis is a native of Greece，from where it has spread in Europe，Central Asia and further eastward across the Hindukush range，into Afghanistan，N.W. Pakistan and Kashmir in India. Except for its endemic home in Greece，where it regenerates naturally by seed over suitable terrain，elsewhere it has been planted. In this paper a hypothesis has been put across to suggest that its introduction east of Greece to Central Asia, Afghanistan，N.W. Pakistan and Kashmir in India, has taken place between 300-100 B.C. along with the spread of Buddhism in these regions, most probably as a substitute for the bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) held in high esteem in this faith. |
