| 摘要 | The objective of this paper is to analyse the Japanese term for Jodo Garden and its definition. The main conclusion is, that a Jodo Garden is to be recognized as an independent garden-style，in which a building of the Jodo architecture (generally an Amida Hall) stands in organical connection with a "south-garden" section and a pond-garden section. The minimum qualification for the pond-garden is a large pond where boating must be possible. Finally，this garden must have been constructed under the influence of the mappo-thinking (pessimism due to the theory of the latter days of the Law)，which was prominent in Japan at least since the middle of the Heian Period. Among the expressions in this paper，which are used in the Japanese language to describe Jodo Gardens, the concise term jodoteien seems to be the most suitable. Due to the close connection between architecture and garden，the term jodoteien is to be understood foremost as a (garden-) constructional expression. A comparison between the Shinden Zukuri Garden and the Jodo Garden shows, that the main building in the center of a Jodo Garden is a building of Jodo architecture and not，as in the case of the Shinden Zukuri Garden，an aristocratical residence in Japanese style. For this reason，it can be concluded that the Jodo Garden must be recognized as an independent garden-style and should not be treated as a type of Shinden Zukuri Garden (shindenzukurikeiteien). The Jodo Garden is a concrete reflection of the gokurakujodo-paradise. Therefore，the Jodo Garden is the first garden-style in the history of the Japanese gardens, where it was tried to realize a Buddhist concept through using methods of garden art. |
