| 摘要 | The article is an attempt to expound and defend the Madhyamika understanding of the Buddhist Anatman (no-self) doctrine by applying the Madhyamika dialectic to theories about the self found in western philosophy. It is therefore an attempt to reach valid conclusions and also an attempt to find an acceptable way of making a comparative study of philosophy. 'Substande' and 'bundle' theories are examined and criticised and the conclusion is reached that the self and whatever is set opposite to it (perceptions, the world，etc.) Are correlative like 'left' and 'right'，and that neither has any independent standing. Thus the line of separation between myself and my world，like the line of separation between left and right，is a construction of thought and placed in different places at different times for practical convenience; it is not a part of reality any more than county boundaries are things that have to be stepped over on a journey. This view could be called 'non-dualist'，not 'monist'. |
