| 摘要 | The essay discusses the interaction between the Buddhist monk,Nagasena, and the Greek Bactrian king,Menander,in the Theravadin (southern Buddhist) quasi-canonical text,"the questions of king Milinda" ("Milindapanha"). An analysis of the dialogue between these two protagonists shows the almost insuperable difficulties a Greek would have in understanding the Buddhist approach to wisdom ("panna"),especially as the latter affirms the doctrine of insubstantiality or the denial of essences ("anatta"). It is here that we may have arrived at an irreconcilable difference between east and west. |
