| 摘要 | Probes the nature of syncretism and its function in the interaction of Chinese religions through a detailed study of Lin Chao-en (1517-1598). Berling argues that syncretism entails the selection and reformulation of borrowed elements according to an accepted religious discourse (orthodoxy) in order to deal with a religious problematic. Lin's disillusionment with his young adulthood led to a repudiation of ineffectual，fragmented religious traditions and a synthesis of the best of Confucianism，Buddhism，and Taoism into a system of practical ethics and a yogic process of meditation to effect the gradual transformation of self into sage. |
