| 摘要 | 1. Religious Characteristics The Buddhist chanting is desired to attain five good sounds:upright, elegant, pure, full and transmissive choral tones, with the melismatic voices to tranquilize the mind with solemnity and piety. 2. Practice of the Religious Chanting (1) Styles of chanting:The Buddhist group usually chant in unison or antiphone, and in syllabic or melismatic styles. (2) Musical mood:The relitgious chanting reveals moderate mood without the contrast of strong and weak voices, but generally sung in even dynamics. (3) Musical aesthetics:The tone quality and tonal feelings reveal simple, solemn and graceful flavor, but neglect the aesthetic concept of Western music. (4) Directions of melody:Melodies of the Buddhist chanting are not always following the textual intonation. The ending of a chant is usualy descending. (5) Oral tradition:The chanting is leaned through listening and oral practice without music notations. 3. The Total Characteristics of melodies (1) Pentatonic scale:The scale system is functionally in Pentatonic, though sometimes extra notes are used. (2) Simple Rhythm:In group chanting regular rhythm is used, while the solo has some free tempo. (3) Melodic patterns:In the Buddhist chanting,a certain melodic pattern is applied for setting different texts. (4) Musical Modes:Five Chinese Pentatonic modes are used. |
