| 摘要 | The purpose of Buddhist education is to minimize the personal and social discomfort which is caused by lack of proper understanding and to enhance the quality of life. Knowledge itself does not guarantee the improvement of the quality of life of a person or the society. If a certain knowledge and products of that knowledge create fear, unrest and confusion in the person or the society, such knowledge is regarded as unwholesome in Buddhism. The story of the man who had the knowledge to bring the dead tiger back to life and was killed by the tiger is a simple example for this. The responsibility of the enlightened educator is to carefully filter the wholesome of healthy part of knowledge, enhance it and then transfer this knowledge to the next generation. Reduction of personal and social discomfort can be achieved by recognizing problems clearly and solving them effectively. The education must provide the student with knowledge and skills for these two tasks. Commitment of Buddhist education is to produce individuals and societies with the capability of reaching the above goal of education. Buddhist education consists of eight areas of discipline. It is important to learn to look at end assess the situation from a proper perspective. One can look at something from many different angles. Many people with different backgrounds see the same thing differently. Some of the views could lad to suffering and confusion. Some other view could lead to the improvement of condition. Other views may not bring any effect. Buddhist education trains the student to view the situation from the angle that improves the conditions for the benefit of oneself and others. For this the educators need to train the students to be detached and broadminded. It is natural that we all come up with "ideas." Many of us act upon these ideas. But unfortunately, some of these ideas are harmful and may result in serious damage to many. Buddhist education gives the student the skills of assessing these ideas properly to select only those ideas that eventually lead to safe and comfortable world. Development of communication skills of the students is another important area of Buddhist education. Language is a major tool that is developed by human-kind. Communication through language can create either fear and suffering or peace and joy. Development of communication skills among the students is a major part of Buddhist education. Another valuable tool that we have is our physical body. Not knowing what to do and what not to do causes a lots of suffering to oneself and others. One area of Buddhist education is to teach the proper use of the physical body. What we saw above is only three areas of discipline in Buddhist education. Once the complete framework is firmly established then whatever the subject one teaches within framework ultimately results benefiting to individuals and society. In the modern society we experience so much fear and confusion due to the lack of direction of the education system. Selecting of the subject matter and method of teaching has to be determined by enlightened teachers. Finding such teachers may not be easy, however such conferences like this that is devoted to Buddhist education seem to be one of the effective ways of developing the awareness of the need for such teachers as well as wholesome educational methods. |
