| 摘要 | With the ending of the Dark Age，Man rediscovered a new world through Renaissance and the Age of enlightenment. Science and Reason became the new belief in Man，and with these twin power Man thought that the world can be perfectly shaped according to his design. The terrible destructions during the World War I & II，and the extreme irrational behaviour of Nazism and Fascism originated in Europe shook that belief into pieces. Flourishing of Existentialism and Deconstructionism in the European intellectual Circle signified Man's perception of a world of meaninglessness and fragmentation. Progress of technology and demand of continued economic growth result a commercial culture sweeping globally like storm. The increasingly sophisticated advertisements and salesmanship on television and other media dictate the modern man with a designated life goal of materialism. Materialism feeds greed，and greed leads to egoism. An egoist would always feels antagonistic toward all others. The modern man is then more and more isolated and spiritually hollow. As 20th century approaches its end，the Western world has already begun to reflect and reexamine the current mode of values. Sociologists once remarked that the problem of 19th century was the death of God (collapse of religious faith)，and the problem of 20th century is the death of Man (collapse of morality). While restoration of religious authority as shaping force may not be likely，spiritual revival of the modern man will be definitely needed. Eastern philosophies such as Confucianism and Buddhism，with emphasis on harmony among men，selflessness, empathy，etc.，can certainly guide Man for a renewal of life. |
