| 摘要 | There are people who benefit from the use of Buddhist techniques such as meditation, mantra, sutra reading, devotional practises and those who do not. This paper will explore the use of these techniques by some practitioners in Singapore and, with the use of medical and counselling case studies, will evaluate their failure or success. The exploration of the failure of meditation techniques will concentrate on the two meditative disciplines of Vipassana and Concentration. The first case presentation will be a 25-year-old male diagnosed with acute reactive psychosis to the stress of Vipassana meditation. The fear arising from the insight cognition of rising and disappearing phenomena. The second presentation will be a 62 year old male not in psychological difficulties but attached to bliss. All concentration meditation techniques have the potential to produce the problems of dullness, attachment to bliss and supernatural powers. The case studies for the beneficial use of Buddhist techniques will be a 32-year-old male who presented with strong suicidal wishes and hysterical symptoms. A female, mother of two, with suicidal wishes, and acute anxieties. The techniques used included mantra, devotional practices and meditation. The difficulties experienced by those using Buddhist techniques are often the result of inadequate preparation, ineffective supervision,a hostile environment and the teachers' poor judgement about the rate at which a student can progress and the techniques most suited for them. The enormous benefits of these techniques can nurture a healing environment that will close deep psychological wounds. |
