Summary The spread of Japanese Shintoism on Taiwan during the rule of Japan has two different characters. One is the "religious character" which accompanies it as the traditional Japanese faith. The other is the "moral character" clearly evident in the national ceremony and the stress on loyalty to the nation and to "Tenno",the Emperor. Such dual characters, the phantom of Japanese so-called "assimilation policy",and the gap between the viewpoints towards religion for the Japanese and the Taiwanese, are factors which caused the failure of Japanese Shintoism to spread widely into the Taiwanese society. This thesis seeks to describe the history and the route by which Japanese Shintoism spread with the status of "national religion". It also will try to analyze the reasons why Japanese Shintoism could not be accepted by the natives of Taiwan. |
