| 摘要 | Religion，according to the author，consists fundamentally in the transcendence of nature. Man，though immersed in nature，transcends it not only through knowledge，but also through higher emotions and will. Each such transcendence，however，posits a different substantive "ideal"，and different higher religions differ between themselves as these ideals differ. Transcendence need not posit any ideal as a "distant" objective to be attained. The ideal may be conceived as entirely functional in nature. Accordingly，there are some higher religions based on such a functional view of the ideal. Some religions or some sects partake of the characters of both and underdeveloped religions may be understood as imperfect attempts at transcendence in either of these directions. |
