| 摘要 | A discussion of mizuko kuyo，a Japanese memorial rite for miscarried and stillborn babies, those who die soon after birth, and aborted fetuses. The increasing popularity of this ritual has alarmed mainline Buddhist denominations, angered a number of Japanese feminists, and confounded religious scholars. Moral pronouncements on the evils of the commercial exploitation involved in this ritual have gone hand in hand with a general antipathy toward popular religious practices and an underlying assumption that the women who carry out the ritual are religious pawns, media patsies, or both. We should seriously consider the possibility that these women have instituted by popular demand a ritual that satisfies their religious needs in a context in which their sexual and reproductive freedom is severely limited and in which their status and role，traditionally constrained by patriarchy，have recently undergone huge challenge and change. |
