| 摘要 | Japanese kesa robes are discussed. Originating in southern Asia, the kesa is a monastic overcostume of rectangular shape，worn like a cape or shawl. The surface of the kesa is composed of multiple pieces of patchwork and is divided in a vertical manner into bands or columns, reflecting the transitory nature of life--one of the principal themes of Buddhism. According to the number of columns in its construction，the kesa can be divided into three types：the five-column type called antaravasaka, the seven-column type called uttarasanga, and the nine-column type called samghati. The number of columns indicates the costume's function and the wearer's rank within the monastery. On the basis of surviving examples, the writer goes on to establish the chronological delvelopment of Japanese kesa. |
