| 摘要 | The writer discusses the Great Stupa at Sanchi，India, a large Buddhist archaeological complex dating from the third century B.C. The great emperor Asoka, a member of the Mauryan dynasty who may be regarded as the second true founder of Buddhism，founded the complex. The building is architecturally unremarkable，but the external decoration is impressively elaborate，most particularly in the consummate artistic decoration of the gateways into the perimetral corridor. These gateways, consisting of four majestic arches, were built in the first century B.C. and are not part of the main building. The unbroken series of bas-reliefs on these arches represent the first large-scale example of Indian sculpture surviving from the Dark Ages. The writer goes on to examine the decorative carvings of the Great Stupa in detail. |
