| 摘要 | Part of a special section on Tibetan art, the writer discusses recent developments in the field of Tibetan art. Over the last ten years, there has been a remarkable rise in international awareness of the Buddhist art of Tibet. The depth of interest and scale of activity in terms of the study, appreciation, and collecting of Tibetan art forms—the complex iconography of which is based in Esoteric Buddhism—are unprecedented. Of main importance is the significant progress that has been made since the 1980s in the exploration, documentation, and stylistic analysis of what remains of Tibet's aesthetic patrimony, especially the art of its religious sites and ancient monuments—an estimated 90 percent of which were destroyed in the Cultural Revolution of 1966–76. It is believed that the preservation and purposeful dissemination of Tibetan art will serve to preserve the living memory of Tibet's culture and help make possible the survival of its civilization. |
