| 摘要 | The Buddhist Abhidhamma texts teach a reduction of experience to primitive components called Abhidhamma. I argue that this should not be understood as a metaphysical claim about "how things are" but merely a pragmatic recommendation to entertain the beliefs about the world most appropriate to the Buddhist goal of eliminating suffering. The paper ends by comparing Abhidhamma to Roderick Firth's interpretation of twentieth-century sense-datum theory as the product of an artificial and learned process of "perceptual reduction." |
