| 摘要 | The purpose is to contrast the politics of nonviolent protest with alternative political strategies, including，but not necessarily，a judicious use of violence. This will form a part of my proposed book on revolution and politics. A more positive concept，'Ahimsa'，has been a religious ideal for the 'benign' religious, Buddhism，Jainism，Christianity，even Judaism which always succumbed to violence in its history before Israel. The ideal had limited appeal for Hinduism and Islam，the two major religions in India. In the context of Indian history，prior to the advent of Buddhism India upheld the ideal of 'Righteous Wars' making judicious use of violence. In the period of India's struggle for independence (1857-1947)，nonviolence as a strategy had limited success, it always drew strength from parallel violent movements, which have not been given their due recognition. |
