| 摘要 | This study is based on 10 years' work in which there was first hand experience of 80 out of the 500 commune studies; and a systematic perusal of international documentary evidence. The Cambodian peasant exhibited three very special qualities：(1) a remarkable degree of adaptation to the powerful and hostile natural conditions (monsoon and flooding of the Mekong); (2) belonging to and participating in an almost perfect (but very unstructured) rural democracy; (3) an unflinching devotion to Buddhism. These characteristics are examined and particular attention is paid to the methods of cultivation -- very low yielding and unintensive，but an adaptation to the natural environment which allowed for regular returns to low inputs. Similarly the Buddhist spirit has contributed to certain characteristics, which have made the recent victories of the Khmers Rouges so overwhelming. Events since 1970，including the consequences of the revolution，are also described. |
